SCOTTSDALE, ARIZONA

The desert hillside site slopes 25' between streets front and rear. Approached from the high side of the property, entry is defined by a sequence of steps and freestanding wall planes framed by Palos Verdes and rock outcroppings. The upper level, with master suite, kitchen, dining, and "great room" is the family gathering place. Spaces feel comfortable, friendly and private, with views of Pinnacle Peak, Troon Mountain and the city lights of Phoenix. Guest quarters are carved into the terrain of the lower level, with direct access to the pool and natural landscape.

Sand-blasted masonry walls reflect the color of the desert. A large roof overhang shelters the patio.

The form of the home responds to function and climate, and gives the home an appropriate presence among the boulders.

"We are living in exceptional architecture that is also warm, friendly and comfortable. We have enjoyed everything about it." —Ruth Jaffe
